Flashback Troy: Vanessa Williams – Comfort Zone

The Comfort Zone was one of many videos I did for Vanessa Williams' "The Comfort Zone" album, released in 1991. I also did the make-up for her album cover as well as the other videos on the album, including Running Back To You, Work To Do, Save The Best For Last, and Just For Tonight.

I toured with her all over the world. At this time in the music industry, the beauty aesthetic was very different than what I wanted to create with Vanessa. There was a "look" that African American artists had at the time - very matte complexion, dark defined brows, and matte brick red lips. I would bring books of Sophia Loren, Ursula Andress, and Audrey Hepburn to show her and she was always open and very inspired to break out of what was expected. She welcomed my ideas with open arms and was never ever a diva. She was a loyal client and a good friend.

I look back with the fondest of memories with my time with Vanessa. She taught me so much about being strong and following your dreams. She has come a long way and I applaud her longevity and achievements.

The Comfort Zone was nominated for five Grammy Awards including: Best Pop Female Vocalist, "Record of the Year" and "Song of the Year" for "Save the Best for Last", Best Rhythm & Blues Vocal Performance - Female for "Runnin' Back to You" (In 1992), and Best Rhythm & Blues Vocal Performance - Female for "The Comfort Zone". -Wikipedia

Troy I remember seeing you on he COmfort Zone Collection atpe which showed all of the behind the scenes footage for all of the videos you did! I loved that make-up back then that you did it was a huge transformation for her coming into that “woman hood” and I think she had her teeth and everything done so it was a good look. You guys should hook back up! Reach out!

Take Care and Good luck with everything,

i’m not sure if my comment went through since it said error. But, i just wanted to thank you for always answering my questions… nicest makeup artist by far! So I use Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Enhancer because it gives me coverage. But i do loose my glow (skin highlighter i will buy). But do you like kevyn Aucoin? its the closest color i can get that matches my face. It seems like i need thick coverage everywhere.. sucks. Than when i contour… the powder gets caky? How do you contour without it getting caky? Anyways thanks for helping me out… i need it lol..

I AM GOING TO LOSE MY MIND! I LOVE Vanessa Williams and this post was great. So many memories. She is beautiful inside and out. I loved her makeup then and even now, on Ugly Betty her look is always fierce.
